How it started:  John was raised in an affluent, Southern Methodist family in South Carolina. The original Laney was a German and came the US with 7 sons; all of which were pastors. John's grandfather was a state senator and his dad was a manager for two textile plants. John grew up feeling rejected and neglected and went through a rebellious phase until he was miraculously saved in 1988. He and Joani were both saved a few months after their marriage; probably due to Joani's praying grandmother that God was using behind the scenes.

John and Joani immersed themselves in a local Pentecostal church and they took the responsibility of youth pastors in 1990. Over the next 5 year period John began to preach in his local church and then took engagements in other churches until his traveling ministry touched churches on the East coast and the throughout the Northwest.

John felt called to business during his time in priestly ministry. He asked to the Lord to take it away and wondered if it was a carnal desire. However, it grew stronger with prayer. His pastor warned him that if a pursued a business career he would miss the call of God to ministry.

One morning in his devotions the Lord gave him Heb 11:7, "By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family." John felt the ark was his real ministry and that it was business and began his career as a developer.

Personal Passion: John is prophetic motivator that has a visionary ability to see potential in people, real estate or business opportunities.  John carries a sense that people live far below their potential and he wants to see the body of Christ rise up into their full inheritance. He is heart is to see the next generation embrace the realization of how good and how generous God really is.

Personal Benefit:  John's real estate development projects allows him to meet many new people. He loves people, loves building new relationships. He's a great net worker and he enjoys sharing his contacts. John likes doing new things and solving new problems. He carries God favor in general to be successful and he's specifically prophetic about seeing daily opportunities.

Value to others:  John helps people step out of the boat because of his example - creative, daring, prophetically out-of-the-box, with the right balance of discernment and wisdom. He has the ability to speak to people and take them to the next level. He is currently mentoring several other developers and businessmen in various stages of professional maturity that seek out his counsel several times a week at their own initiative. John enjoys praying with them, giving suggestions, and sharing his network of contacts. His skill is his prophetic insight to develop people, business, real estate and inventions.

Business Potential (upside):  John sees the upside of his business as unlimited. God has positioned him to be mentored by several other developers that work on hundred million dollar projects. John is a practical example of how finances flow toward good ideas. Here are a few examples of the kinds of things he's involved in.

  • Wind to Energy projects nationwide.

  • Wine valley Golf Walla Walla WA

  • River View subdivision Clarkston WA

  • Sienna Sky 40 town homes Richland WA

  • Commercial/Residential in Stanfield OR

  • Waters Edge 16 Condominiums Clarkston

  • Bio Diesel Plant in Stanfield

  • Potlatch Paper Lewiston Joint Venture with a major contractor to provide maintenance and construction

  • Putting together investor groups to buy and sell industrial and commercial properties

Complexities, failures (downside):  John works on many long shots. It takes perseverance, patience, discipline, and hard work over time. Changes, delays and outright failures are not uncommon. However, John has the ability to see God's direction to take the next step to resurrect every situation.

Vision for the Kingdom:  John's goal is leverage his financial position into time to write, teach, and do seminars on a national level. One of his dreams to help young people especially his own children find an entrepreneurial anointing to release God's favor.

John sees the body of Christ in the midst of a major reformation in the way we relate to God in the marketplace, and the way we see the church. He carries God's authority to make a difference and he believes spiritual parents / mentors should have the financial means to help "the kids" with time and money. John expects the blessing of God on his own life and on those he touches.

Impact from Releasing Kings:  Releasing Kings gave John the final dose of permission to follow his destiny into business. It settled his heart with the concept of pursuing marketplace ministry and bolstered his confidence in his own eventual success. Reading the book amounted to an ordination for John; just as David was anointed to be King by Samuel years before he was actually ruled. In his heart he could say, "I was right"... to be what he was - entrepreneurial with a prophetic twist.

How Can John Help You - "All things are possible to them that believe." The reason they become possible is that people who "believe" are willing "to do" what it takes. Faith has legs.

It will be a few years before John's materials are formalized into books and conferences. He is planning to help produce a DVD series with John Garfield on Releasing Kings. In the mean time, his following of mentorees continues to grow informally... and prosper.
