Moving to a Wealth
Mentality Pt4
“Wealth” as a term is often reserved
for a small class of people that live lavish and excessive lifestyles. I
think there was a TV show called Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous
that catered to the curious envy many of us have for rich people. In
this newsletter, I’d like to take the wall down and show how you can
touch wealth as well. After all, it’s God’s idea – especially for Kings.
But remember the LORD your
God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and
so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it
is today. Deut 8:18
The blessing of the LORD
brings wealth, and he adds no trouble to it.
Prov 10:22
It has helped me to
see my “poverty mentality” by contrasting it with those that are
accustomed to wealth. Each class views money differently.
Lower Class – These folks get money
at the end of their bi-weekly paycheck and use it to buy stuff. The
favorite purchases are a new TV, a better used car, or things for
the house. Whenever they have money they spend it on “Stuff.”
Middle Class – This income group is
often college educated and can have relatively high paying jobs.
Whatever the income level is, spending is adjusted upward. The
distinction from the lower class is credit. These folks can borrow
money and make payments on “bigger stuff” like boats, vacations, new
cars, new homes, and second homes. Their toys are adjusted up until
their payments match their income.
Wealthy – These folks actually
don’t look noticeably different than middle or lower class people by
outward appearances. However instead of having a priority on “stuff”
they buy income generating assets. In other words they buy things
that make more money – it might be a business, an investment, real
estate, or network marketing. Their focus is on being
entrepreneurial instead of working for another person’s company.
Generosity - This comparison is
simplistic but it does make a real world distinction between wealth and
riches. All three classes spend money (riches), but only the wealthy
have assets that generate income. Even less affluent families spend
around 100,000 a year. That approaches $10M in riches spent over a
lifetime. Please note one more distinction. Lower and middle class
people are generally always cash poor. They don’t have the flexibility
to be generous. Christians in each of those classes can be taught to
tithe in the sense that paying the Lord is like one more bill; only its
at the top of the list. But, they simply don’t have the resources
available to be truly generous. The Holy Spirit can drop hints all day
long about financing a need and it is simply a leading they (usually
“we”) can’t respond to. By contrast, wealthy people can always leverage
cash and credit to buy another income generating asset or respond to a
financial need. They have the ability to be givers instead of just
tithers.
The result – People with a wealth
mentality can take talents given to them by the Lord, double them, and
give them back. What if you give a talent to a lower or middle class
mentality? It will either get spent or buried until needed because they
are not theologically able to use assets to generate more assets. They
punch the clock and spend their money.
Your assignment – regardless of your
financial status, scrape up enough cash to buy your first income
generating asset. I could list examples, but it would be better if you
made it a matter of prayer and allowed the Holy Spirit to lead you. Next
time you want to really help a ministry, instead of giving them cash,
give them the ongoing proceeds from one of your income generating
assets. God has promised to give you the power to produce wealth without
adding a lot of trouble to it. It's part of your "new land" waiting for
our faith to rise to a level where we can posses it.
Ramifications - Now, for a moment,
imagine that you have wealth - assets that generate income. Most
companies realize their greatest asset is their employees. Imagine you
have employees that you disciple to double their talents. Get it?
Employees are income generating assets! Not in the robotic sense of
course. What if Kings discipled their employees to accumulate wealth.
Your ability to expand the Kingdom would be multiplied greatly. We are
not just changing your fruitfulness, we're changing the way you disciple
others so that your spiritual sons and daughters are generous and gifted
both spiritually and financially.
Inheritance - One last ingredient of
the wealth mentality. If you have income generating assets in your
estate they can be passed on to your children. Imagine your labor
expanding the Kingdom continuing through your children and grandchildren
long after you've gone home to be with the Lord!
A good man leaves an
inheritance for his children's children,
but a sinner's wealth is
stored up for the righteous. Prov 13:22
