Special thanks to all those who wrote them.   People - the Currency of Transformation When Giving Isn't Enough - The history of pouring money into needy nations like Africa isn't great, as we discussed in a prior newsletter (Give a Fish or Make a Fisherman). Over 400 Billion has already been spent and we don't have much to show for it. Recently the G-8 decided to add 60 Billion to fight aids and malaria. The good news is that many African nations have a higher per capita Christian presence compared to developed nations (like the US). And, they are very open to becoming self-sufficient. The problem is that pouring $60B into those nations doesn't necessarily help anyone become more entrepreneurial; they actually become more "welfare" oriented and their poverty can be increased. The Secret Is! - I'm personally very excited about this Kingly lifestyle. It's really encouraging to see how it ignites other believers in far away places like Calgary, the Netherlands, and West Virginia. More Recently I met Mark Charles and started dreaming about micro-business in developing nations. My first thought was, "How do we start businesses, finance them and monitor them." I almost forgot about the key ingredient for making this cake until I met Dereck Mombera. The secret is people... Kings. Dereck is a farmer in Uganda. Not a truck garden! He's the CEO of a 2000 acre farm. He didn't require any conversion from me either. He simply read the Releasing Kings, ignited and decided to set a new goal. I couldn't word it any better than he did in his interview. I have the desire to transform the mindset of my fellow Africans from that of being a receiver to a giver. I am looking for other businessman with the kingdom mindset to join me in transforming the face of Africa. I was surprised and amazingly blessed to see that God has already prepared a generation of Kings in their native lands that will change their nations. The idea that other nations will pour enough money into the third world to make a difference satisfies some collective guilt but totally misses the point of people. We'll likely create more welfare mentality than difference with the "money only" approach. We can change nations. We just have to do it by sparking the dream in God's people... working with those that are already changed and setting an example for those on the way. How do we Change People? - Rule number one is to realize we can't. That's the job of the Holy Spirit. However we can sow seed by writing books, set examples by starting micro-businesses, and network with those that are already ignited like Dereck. Here's a recent email that touches this issue. Dear John - Thanks for your newsletters. Receiving these contributions are blessing me and those I am sharing with. I would be grateful to receive help with starting micro projects for poor communities. I am actually looking at snail rearing by women in a village community. My main difficulties are getting the women to participate. Though they are poor, hopelessness, laziness and lethargy has set in. We went evangelizing there early this week and would like to include making fishers instead of giving them fish. I will be grateful for any assistance and advice, Remain blessed. Tima Hi Tima - Thanks for writing. I’m sorting through some of the same micro-business issues. Starting a business is a great opportunity for someone that is already motivated. It takes a lot of energy, wisdom and commitment so I wouldn’t impose it on just anyone. We are starting to work with natives that are very motivated and already moving – it’s very exciting.   The same hopelessness and lethargy you mention are spiritual issues tied to their theology and the degree of revival present in their community. Becoming a King is really a stage in our spiritual walk. Maturing God's people to their Kingly inheritance is the reason we write books and newsletters and do conferences. I’d suggest ministering to those people where they are (salvation and maturity issues) and starting micro-businesses with those already excited about prospering and ministry through the marketplace. They will multiply, convert money to ministry, and change the course of history. They will also be contagious examples in their communities. Missions is becoming viral and self-sustaining. Kings like Dereck will carry it to the uttermost parts of the earth via the marketplace. Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
