How to Start a Small Group

Harold's new book -
About 5 years ago Harold gave a draft of Who Is God to me for
review. I was so impacted by what I read, we co-authored Releasing
Kings and summarized the message in chapter 7. Harold has just
published Who is God
in a hard bound book which I highly recommend. It provides the
theological foundation for personal initiative in Marketplace Ministry.
Very insightful and easy to read.
Asking For Your
"Whatsoever"
Prayer - I reread Who Is God
over the Holidays and had to adjust my approach to prayer. The written
goal for my relationship with God was:
I want to improve
my intercession and prayer by responding to the promptings of the
Holy Spirit. I want to be in-season and in-tune continually.
That sounds good. We
do want to seek the Kingdom first (Mt 6:33). I don't want to turn God
into a Santa Claus where I just list all my carnal desires and expect
divine action. I want to suggest prayer is more than just discerning the
will of God and praying it into reality. My prayer goal was very passive
in this sense; If I didn't hear anything from the Holy Spirit, I didn't
have anything to pray about. The real essence of mature prayer involves
our initiative... our heart's desires. Listen to Jesus words:
"So I say to you: Ask and it
will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door
will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; he who
seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. Luke
11:9-10 NIV
If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you
wish, and it will be given you. 8 This is to my Father's glory, that
you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. John
15:7-8 NIV
Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. John
15:16 NIV
In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the
truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. John
16:23 NIV
My Heart and God's Heart - The
reality of hearing God is this. There are certainly times when we get
very specific guidance and act on it and see the fruit of walking with
Jesus. However the norm is that God guides us in general directions and
waits for us to take some initiative to define our part. He's looking
for relationships. That means you and I have to bring something to the
"relational" table in the way of initiative. The relationship He's
longing with you and I is much deeper than simple obedience. God is
looking for people that share His heart; people that see the direction
and fill in the blanks with the desires of their own heart.
Silence - Here's the hard reality
that impacts our theological premises for prayer. If you wait for God to
guide every step you're going to make a lot of foolish mistakes. He
simply doesn't guide every step. This is particularly common in the
charismatic/prophetic camp (of which I am a part). We can hear God
really well - so well that we occasionally have to invent things we
think He's saying when it's silent. We don't have a theology for
silence. We don't have a theology that supports initiative or operating
out of our heart's desire either.
Start the conversation - Most
of our mistakes are not on the side of presumption. We miss God most for
being passive. He's waiting for us to learn to ask "whatever." He's
waiting for us to learn to act. Before you make a prayer list or a to-do
list or set goals, have a conversation with the Lord. Talk to him about
your own heart's desires and plans. The real beauty of having goals and
a prayer diary is that we show initiative but we continually review our
course with the Father and make adjustments on the way. We don't operate
independently from God but we do extend and implement His purposes
through our involvement in the Kingdom.
God has designed the
Kingdom so that His power is operating through our heart's desires and
requests. He gets glory when we speak to mountains and cause them to
move! He's thrilled when we come up with a new idea... Think about it -
If we can't offer a new idea, we're really just robotic instead of
relational. God isn't looking for a relationship with an obedient
computer. He's decided He wants you... to be a King.
Now to him who is able to do
immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power
that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in
Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

conceal a matter, But the glory of kings is to search out a matter.

Get it? - Kingdom doesn't start
until we cross the threshold with a personal agenda. Obedience alone
won't get us past being a servant. Our call is to be a friend. He is the
King of kings and Lord of lords. What does that make us?
I no longer call you
servants, because a servant does not know his master's business.
Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned
from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me,
but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit — fruit that
will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my
name. John 15:15-16 NIV
